Getting started

Learn how to sign in, move around IntQuest, switch the theme, and import your first documents.

Overview

This page covers the first things you see in IntQuest: the sign-in page, the navigation bar, the account menu, the light and dark themes, and the Import dialog for uploading documents. It also describes the messages and dialogs that appear throughout the application.

  • 1 Username - your username or the email address of your account.
  • 2 Password - your password.
  • 3 Show password - the eye icon that shows what you typed.
  • 4 Sign in securely - signs you in and opens Stats.
  1. In Username, enter your username. You can also enter the email address of your account.
  2. In Password, enter your password. Optional: click the eye icon (Show password) to check what you typed.
  3. Click Sign in securely.

After a successful sign-in, IntQuest opens the Stats page.

If something is wrong, a message appears under the field:

  • Username is required or Password is required: fill in the empty field.
  • Username or password is incorrect: check your credentials and try again. Repeated failures can lock your account; an administrator can unlock it on the Users page.

On a new installation, the master administrator signs in once with the deployment bootstrap password and must then set a permanent password. See Secure administrator bootstrap.

The navigation bar at the top of every page is the main way to move around IntQuest.

  • 1 IntQuest logo - returns to Stats.
  • 2 Navigation items - Stats, Search, Files, Administration, and Docs.
  • 3 Import - opens the Import dialog.
  • 4 Theme switch - switches between the dark and light themes.
  • 5 Account button - opens the account menu.

From left to right:

  • IntQuest logo: returns to Stats.
  • Stats: the investigation overview with totals and charts.
  • Search: full-text and keyword search across documents.
  • Files: the list of processed and queued files. Shown only if your account has the Modify Settings permission.
  • Administration: users, groups, settings, models, and topics. Shown only if your account has the Modify Settings or Users / Groups permission.
  • Docs: opens this documentation in a new browser tab.
  • Import: opens the Import dialog.
  • Theme switch (moon and sun icons): switches between the dark and light themes.
  • Account button (your initials and username): opens the account menu.

The current page is highlighted. Press Alt+1 to Alt+5 to open Stats, Search, Files, Administration, or Docs from the keyboard. The shortcuts don’t work while you are typing in a field.

On narrow screens the navigation items move to a second row that you can scroll sideways, and the account button shows only your initials.

If Files or Administration is missing, your account doesn’t have the permission for that area. Ask your administrator for access. See Roles and permissions.

Account menu

  • 1 Account button - opens and closes the menu.
  • 2 Signed in as - the account you are using.
  • 3 Change password - opens the password dialog.
  • 4 Logout - signs you out.

Click the account button to open the menu:

  • Signed in as shows the account you are using.
  • Change password opens a dialog where you enter a New password and Confirm new password, then click Update password.
  • Logout signs you out.

Light and dark theme

IntQuest opens in the dark theme. Click the theme switch in the navigation bar to change to the light theme, and click it again to return to dark. Your browser remembers the choice for future visits and applies it in other open IntQuest tabs.

Import documents

The Import dialog uploads files for processing. It opens on top of the current page, so you don’t lose your place.

  • 1 Language - the language of the documents.
  • 2 Parsing method - how the text is extracted.
  • 3 Upload File - selects the files to import; the supported types are listed below it.
  • 4 Close - closes the dialog without uploading.
  • 5 Save - uploads the selected files.

Upload files

  1. In the navigation bar, click Import.
  2. In Language, choose the language of the documents.
  3. In Parsing method, choose how the text is extracted. See Parsing methods.
  4. Click Upload File and select one or more files.
  5. Optional: click the X next to a file to remove it from the list.
  6. Click Save.

IntQuest uploads the files one at a time and shows the progress, for example Uploading 2 of 5. When every file succeeds, the message Successfully uploaded N file(s) appears and the dialog closes. If some files fail, the dialog stays open, reports how many succeeded, and lists the files that failed.

To close the dialog without uploading, click Close, the X in the header, or press Esc.

Languages

OptionCode
Englishen
Romanianro
Hungarianhu
Russianru
Frenchfr

The default is English. Choose the language of the text in the documents, so that the right models process them.

Parsing methods

MethodUse it for
PDFtoText (Recommended for digital PDFs)PDFs with selectable text. This is the default.
Tika (Office documents and text)Word, OpenDocument, Excel, HTML, XML, text, JSON, and CSV files. Tika can’t import PDFs.
PDF OCR (Scanned PDFs)Scanned PDFs and image-only PDFs that have no selectable text.

If you aren’t sure how a PDF was made, start with PDFtoText (Recommended for digital PDFs). Use PDF OCR (Scanned PDFs) only if the text of the imported document is missing or unreadable.

If you select Tika (Office documents and text) together with a PDF file, the dialog shows PDF files cannot be imported with Tika. and clears the selection. Choose a PDF method instead.

Supported file types

You can import .pdf, .doc, .docx, .odt, .odg, .html, .htm, .xml, .txt, .json, .csv, and .xlsx files. You can select several files at once. If you select an unsupported file, the dialog names it and lists the supported types. Save stays disabled until at least one valid file is selected.

After the upload

  • Uploaded files wait in the processing queue. You can follow them on the In queue tab of Files.
  • The processor checks for new files at a regular interval, 30 seconds by default. An administrator can change it with the Scan interval setting in Process settings.
  • Processed documents appear in Search, Stats, and Files.

Every user can open the Import dialog, but only accounts with the Modify Settings permission can upload. For other accounts, each file fails.

Messages and dialogs

IntQuest uses these messages and dialogs across the application:

  • Notifications: short messages in the top-right corner that confirm an action, for example Saved filter "Contracts". They close on their own.
  • Error dialogs: titled Error on performing operation!, with a description of what went wrong. Click Dismiss to close.
  • Confirmation dialogs: appear before destructive actions, such as deleting files, users, or groups. They name what will be deleted. Cancel is selected by default.
  • Session expired: if your session ends, the dialog Your session expired. Please log in again to continue. appears. Click Go to login and sign in again.
  • Something went wrong: if part of a page fails to load, an error panel with a Retry button replaces it.
  • Error page: if a page can’t be shown at all, an error page shows the error and a Go Back to Login button.

Notes

  • After sign-in you always land on Stats.
  • Stats and Search each keep their own search text and date range for the browser session. Saved filters are shared between them.
  • Date filters use your computer’s time zone. Use the same time zone as the IntQuest server to get accurate results. See Stats.
