Scan targets
Save the addresses, ranges and hosts you scan, and choose how each one is scanned.
Overview
A scan target is a saved address that schedules scan: an IP address, a CIDR range, a hostname or an FQDN, together with the scan type used for it. Use the Targets tab of Scanning to add targets, see which schedules use them and when they were last scanned.
Screen tour
- Search targets…: filters by address or name.
- Type: shows All types, or only IP Range, Hostname or FQDN targets.
- Status: shows All statuses, or only Active targets.
- Address: the IP address, CIDR range, hostname or FQDN. Click the Address or Type header to sort.
- Schedules: how many schedules reference this target, or None.
- Edit and Delete: change or remove the target.
- Last scan: when the most recent scan of the target finished.
The Last scan column shows when the most recent scan of the target finished, for example 10/13/2026, 2:00:41 AM UTC. A red Failed badge appears under the time when that scan failed. Never scanned means the target is waiting for its first scan to finish. The column reflects scans that completed or failed.
Create a target
- Type: how the address is written: IP Range, Hostname or FQDN.
- Address: the address to scan.
- Scan type: how the target is scanned, here Proxmox (hypervisor) for a Proxmox VE node.
- Port range (optional): the TCP ports to probe on this target.
- On the Targets tab, click New Target.
- Choose the Type. Choosing IP Range sets the scan type to Sweep. Choosing Hostname or FQDN sets it to SSH. You can change it afterwards.
- Enter the Address, for example
10.20.0.0/24,10.20.0.15,db01ordb01.example.com. - Choose the Scan type.
- Optionally, enter a Port range, for example
22,80,443or1-1024. - Click Create target.
New targets are Active.
Target types
| Type | Address format | Example |
|---|---|---|
| IP Range | A single IPv4 address, or a CIDR range | 10.20.0.15, 10.20.0.0/24 |
| Hostname | A single machine name: letters, digits and hyphens | db01 |
| FQDN | A fully qualified domain name | db01.example.com |
Scan types
| Scan type | Use it for | Credential type |
|---|---|---|
| Sweep | Discovering which hosts are alive in a range | None (optional SSH, WMI or SNMP credential for the follow-up) |
| SSH | Linux, Unix and BSD servers, and Proxmox hosts | SSH |
| WMI | Windows servers and workstations, including Hyper-V hosts | WMI |
| SNMP | Switches, routers, firewalls, printers and other network devices | SNMP |
| VMware vSphere | vCenter Server or a standalone ESXi host | VMware |
| Proxmox (hypervisor) | A Proxmox VE node or cluster | Proxmox |
For what each scan type collects and which ports it uses, see Scan types.
CIDR ranges always use Sweep
A CIDR range such as 10.20.0.0/24 covers many hosts, so it must use the Sweep scan type. A sweep finds the live hosts, and DeviceQuest then launches an authenticated follow-up scan of each host that has a matching credential. Use a single address, hostname or FQDN for SSH, WMI, SNMP, VMware and Proxmox targets.
If you combine a CIDR range with another scan type, the modal shows CIDR ranges require a Sweep scan. Use a single host address for SSH, WMI, SNMP, or VMware.
Port range
The Port range lists the TCP ports to probe on the target, as comma-separated ports and inclusive ranges: 22,80,443, 1-1024 or 22,80,443,8000-8100. Leave it empty to use the scanner’s defaults. To reuse the same port list on many schedules, put it in a scan profile instead (the ports key of a Sweep profile). See Scan profiles.
Edit a target
- Click Edit on the target’s row.
- Change the Type, Address, Scan type or Port range. For a target whose scan type is outside the list, the Scan type shows Keep current, which keeps it.
- Click Save changes.
Schedules that use the target pick up the change from their next run.
Delete a target
- Click Delete on the target’s row.
- In the Delete target dialog, click Delete target.
Schedules that reference the target need a new target before they can run again. Their Run now shows This schedule no longer has an active saved target. Reassign before running.
Fields
| Field | Description | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Type | How the address is written. | IP Range (default), Hostname or FQDN. |
| Address | The address to scan. | Required. Must match the type: Enter a valid IP address or CIDR (e.g. 10.0.0.0/24)., Enter a valid hostname (letters, digits, hyphens). or Enter a valid FQDN (e.g. host.example.com). |
| Scan type | How the target is scanned. | A CIDR range requires Sweep. |
| Port range (optional) | TCP ports to probe. | Comma-separated ports or ranges, otherwise Enter valid port(s) or range(s) (e.g. 22,80,443 or 1-1024). |
Statuses
| Status | Meaning | Next possible status |
|---|---|---|
| Active | The target can be used by schedules and Run now. | Inactive |
| Inactive | The target is kept, and its schedules wait until the target is active again. | Active |
